A new era for planning and managing logistics systems

The lab convened a one-day symposium bringing together researchers and industry partners to discuss how logistics systems are conceived and operated. The central theme was a shift away from static, plan-then-execute models toward adaptive systems that continuously re-optimize as conditions change on the ground.

Sessions covered real-time re-routing under disruption, the growing role of learning-based dispatch policies alongside classical optimization, and how organizations are restructuring planning teams around these tools rather than bolting them onto existing workflows. A recurring point of discussion was the gap between what optimization research produces and what operators are actually willing to trust and act on — several speakers argued that this human-in-the-loop question is now the harder problem.

The lab plans to publish a short position paper summarizing the discussion later this year.
